West Dunbartonshire Council
The council organises its business through five Departments with main offices in Garshake Road, Dumbarton and Rosebery Place, Clydebank
In summary we:
- service a population of around 100,000 located within the geographic areas of Clydebank, Dumbarton and Vale of Leven
- employ over 5,000 people, making us the largest employer in the area
- work collaboratively with many partners and stakeholders to improve services
- offer attractive benefits e.g. holidays, pensions, training and flexible working
- actively promote equality and safe working
- opened our first workplace nursery in Garshake Road, November 2000
- implemented a no smoking policy in February 2000
- were the first Community Authority in Scotland

The Area:
- is full of historical interest e.g. the capital of the ancient kingdom of Strathclyde stretching from Loch Lomond to Morecambe Bay
- is part of Loch Lomond National Park and provides a gateway to the Highlands
- provides an entry point to the Forth and Clyde Canal re-opened as part of the Millennium Celebrations
- benefits from international tourism particularly given its proximity to Glasgow and Glasgow International Airport
- has wide ranging housing, from modern starter homes to traditional family residences
- has varied education and cultural services e.g. schools, early education and childcare centres, community education centres, outdoor education facilities, libraries and museums
- has high level social support services e.g. disability resource centre, sensory impairment team, residential and day care facilities
- has a range of retail and leisure opportunities e.g. leisure centres, health and fitness centres, parks and municipal golf and bowling facilities
Council Aims:
- Provide high quality, best value services. We monitor, review and continually improve our services by setting new targets, seeking the views of our service users, and maintain a corporate complaints system
- Strengthen local democracy by seeking the views of the community and involving them in the decisions we make
- Improve the local economy by supporting local businesses and our most deprived communities, regenerating our town centres, and tackling unemployment
- Protect and enhance the environment by protecting the quality of our land, water and air, encouraging 'green' tourism, promoting public health and reducing pollution
Recruitment Standards
West Dunbartonshire Council will offer the best possible recruitment service and ensure that everyone is treated fairly at each stage of the recruitment process.
We will:
- treat you in a polite, efficient, friendly and fair manner
- treat your application and enclosures confidentially
- send you a recruitment pack within two working days. Applicants should note that other formats e.g. electronic, large print, audio and braille are available on request
- use the completed acknowledgement postcard to confirm receipt of your application
- let you know within fifteen working days of the closing date, whether you have been selected for an interview, giving you notice and time to prepare
- invite applicants with a disability for an interview, when their application meets the essential needs of the vacancy
- support any special needs you may have to help you attend the interview
- try to reschedule your interview, within the recruitment timetable, if you cannot attend at the time requested
- contact the successful applicant when a recruitment decision is finalised, ideally within 5 working days. However, recruitment decisions for posts requiring a criminal record or medical check, will take longer
- contact all unsuccessful applicants within ten working days
- provide feedback to applicants where requested
