Creating the ideal hospital

Already one of the most successful and innovative Trusts in the country (with over 4,500 employees and 912 beds), our vision is to create the ideal hospital where patients and staff feel as though they're the most important people in the world. It's an ambitious goal, but we're working towards it steadily, and the last few years have seen significant developments - not least in a fourfold increase in budgets, and major and on-going investment in people and surroundings. Among key landmarks we can include

  • Gaining 2 star rating (narrowly missing out on three)
  • Being awarded IWL Practice status
  • Meeting all government targets relating to waiting lists and waiting times
  • Launching the largest privately funded building programme within the NHS
  • Commissioning a new purpose built £60m Heart Centre (opening May 2004)

As well as refurbishment and new build, we've invested substantially in new equipment and technology, including a new £13.5 million radiology centre, a state-of the-art analyser for the microbiology team and one of the UK's first automated pharmacy dispensing machines, capable of managing 11,000 medicines. We're expanding and improving services, and delivering higher quality care to more and more people… through an increasingly well-supported team.

An ideal place to work

We've been working hard to create a more satisfying and rewarding working environment. Numbers have been growing along with service developments, and we're still on the increase, with a current drive on to bring in even more nurses and consultants. We've been listening to our staff's views, and though encouraged by the fact 70% feel we're a great place to work, there's plenty more to be done.

To help things along, we've introduced
  • Multi-disciplinary teams, giving you good exposure and experience, and a real say in improving services
  • A new appraisal process to better understand your needs and develop your skills
  • Workforce planning and skill mix reviews, to make work more rewarding
  • Enhanced communication channels, involving you more in developments
  • Flexible working, to help deliver a work/life balance
  • A childcare co-ordinator, to explore new ways to support working parents

Coupled with excellent training and teaching facilities, and a strong research and development base, we're making real steps towards our goal. So isn't this your ideal next move?
