Shire Information

Shire enjoys the best of both worlds - a history of success built over the past two decades, combined with the atmosphere and excitement of a high growth company building a successful business model in the pharmaceutical industry.

This is an exciting time to be working at Shire. We are putting in place a globally integrated, team-based organisation to support our current and future requirements. We are large enough to offer a variety of opportunities yet structured so that each employee can make a difference and have a positive impact on the success of our company and, ultimately, on the patients whose lives our products improve every day.

We are the market leader in products for the treatment of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder in the United States; and we have other positions of strength in both the US and Europe with our treatments for epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, end-stage renal disease, ulcerative colitis and HIV; we have a growing European network; and we have an exciting pipeline of products in development for future commercialisation.

Shire has grown faster than many other companies in the industry and is now the largest pharmaceutical company in the UK, and one of the fastest growing speciality pharmaceutical companies in the world.

Over the past decade we have experienced significant growth through a number of acquisitions and the addition of numerous products into our portfolio.

Shire’s latest acquisition – the Human Genetics Therapies (HGT) business unit – has further amplified Shire's market reach, fortifying our portfolio and pipeline with a range of new therapeutic possibilities for patients suffering from genetic diseases. This new business unit is poised to redefine the future for patients suffering from rare genetic diseases.

Now, as we enter a new highly focused phase of growth, we are building on our functional strengths by organising our efforts around Therapeutic Areas (TAs) led and managed by cross-functional teams of R&D and commercial employees. The rest of the organisation is structured to support the TAs.

Currently the structure includes three TAs: Central Nervous System (CNS), gastrointestinal (GI) and General Products, which include a variety of products, most notably, Forsenol®, our new therapy for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in patients with end-stage renal disease.

The objective of the TA approach is to bring together teams of highly talented employees, provide the appropriate focus and resources, and change them with managing products from development through to commercialisation and ongoing lifecycle management.
