Company Background

Palm Computing was founded in 1992. In 1996, Palm introduced the Pilot 1000 and Pilot 5000 products that led the emergence of handheld computing. The company became independent on March 2, 2000, and was traded on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol PALM.

In 2003, shareholders voted to spin off PalmSource, Inc., maker of the Palm OS platform software, as an independent company and acquire Handspring, Inc. The combined company is known as Palm, Inc. and is traded on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol PLMO. Uniting the Zire™, Tungsten™ and Treo™ sub-brands, the creation of Palm launched a new, stronger market leader in handheld computer and communications hardware and software solutions. Palm in Business and the Enterprise

Palm is the handheld market leader in areas such as mobile business, healthcare, education and government and will continue to extend that lead by delivering compelling business and enterprise mobile information-management solutions, business-focused hardware and software products, robust service and support, and innovative market-leading alliances with developers and solutions providers.

Palm continues to build strategic relationships with partners that are aligned with the vision of delivering easy-to-use, secure, mobile solutions for business. As an example, Palm's deep relationship with IBM allows for a range of capabilities, such as extending IBM 's WebSphere Everyplace Access to IBM's secure instant messaging program SameTime to Palm handhelds. This meets the demand of customers wanting secure access to enterprise applications and data on Palm handhelds.

You can make a difference

Palm employs about 800 world wide, including 120 people in Europe (in ten countries) and 40 in Asia Pacific (in five countries), which means that every one of us makes a difference.

Big company benefits

A full range of competitive benefits is provided in each country where we employ people. We provide stock options and a stock purchase plan for all employees so you will have a stake in our success and an opportunity for long-term wealth.

We pay for results

We will give you performance feedback regularly, all employees are eligible for bonus, depending on Company and individual performance, we promote on merit and we hold people accountable.

Our culture is friendly and open

Palm is not status-conscious. We have a business-casual dress code from entry level to SVP, and everyone is on first-name terms. You will have regular opportunities to talk with the senior leaders and our CEO visits Europe and Asia regularly.

We're flexible

Wherever possible, we encourage employees to work flexibly. This could mean staggered start and finish times, working from home a few days a week, working part time or working from a new location. We expect a lot from our employees and we try to be flexible in return.

We'll keep you informed

We use face-to-face meetings, email and our well-developed intranet to keep employees informed and give them access to the network of information they need to be successful.

We offer on-job development

Palm is still a small Company. We do not have a large infrastructure of training and development but we can provide challenges and learning opportunities to you in your day-to-day work. There is abundant opportunity to form and join cross-functional teams, to broaden your role beyond conventional functional boundaries, to participate in pan-European projects and to liase with our headquarters in California.

So, what are the down sides?

Like any Company, there are some challenges to working with Palm. If you're thinking about joining us, you should know that:

  • We have been losing money for two financial years, although we have made great improvements to our operating costs, product costs and our rate of product innovation/launch, all of which have been recognised by industry analysts.
  • There is an intense quarterly focus and hard work is the norm.
  • Dollar and headcount budgets are limited and you won't have a lot of central or administrative resources to back you up. You will have to be hands-on.
  • Palm is changing rapidly and there are no guarantees that your role will not change. Within reasonable bounds, we ask people to be flexible about their duties
  • We don't have formal processes for everything.
  • We are a young organisation and still somewhat US-centric.
