Knowledge Transfer Partnerships is a UK-wide, cross government activity that helps businesses to improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills that reside within the 'Knowledge Base'. The knowledge base comprises of Higher education institutions, further education colleges, private and public sector research organisations and institutes. Personal and professional development

Every KTP Associate spends at least 10% of their time on training and personal development, in addition to having responsibility for a project intended to bring about strategic change in some aspect of a company's business. KTP Associates are also encouraged to register for a higher degree if they have not already done so, and will attend the modular KTP Associate Development Course. This covers project management, report-writing, making formal presentations, and communication and influencing skills: all skills needed for a successful career in business.

Additionally, Associates can obtain a nationally recognised management qualification awarded by the Chartered Management Institute.
