Development of the Company

The history of the company can be traced back to the end the 19th century with Henry Barrett Ltd. The company in its present form was the result of a management buyout in 1992. Since that time under the leadership of James Barrett and the Executive Board, the company has grown significantly through acquisitions and the application of the sales philosophy of good service and providing added value services.

On 1 October 2005, the Company acquired Woodberry Chillcott Holdings Limited and its subsidiaries. The Woodberry Chillcott business, which operates primarily in the South West, supplies steel and tools to the engineering industry through six depots with its main distribution base centred on Bristol. The addition of Woodberry Chillcott has enhanced the Group's market representation in the engineering and bright steel markets.

With effect from 1 July 2006 the Company acquired the business of Cwmbran Steels Ltd, a local general steels stockist based in Cwmbran, north of Newport in South Wales. Together with the South Wales business of Woodberry Chillcott, both these businesses have been moved into shared premises in Cwmbran which will enable them to expand and develop

Through our Laser Tube business we have continued to invest in new laser cutting technology for tube processing. £0.5m was invested in the year and plans are already in hand for the installation of one of the largest capacity tube laser machines currently available.

In 2007 the company opened Omega Steel a site in Scunthorpe dedicated to the processing of steel (cut, drill, shotblast and paint) using the latest state of the art equipment and thus providing an unrivalled service for our sites to use.

In addition to these major projects, the Group has also invested over £1.2 million in new fuel efficient transport and almost £2.5 million in other plant and equipment. The company also invests in training and development and provides career prospects for anyone with ability, application and hard work.
