A bit about the Borough
Sandwell is made up of the six towns of Oldbury, Rowley Regis, Smethwick, Tipton, Wednesbury and West Bromwich. With motorway links to the M5 and M6, a well-served rail network and efficient Metro system, the borough is well connected to the rest of the country, including nearby Birmingham – a major European city offering a whole host of entertainment venues, art galleries, museums and the internationally renowned Bullring shopping experience.
A vibrant metropolitan borough, Sandwell is situated at the heart of the famous ‘Black Country’, a reference to the region’s rich but smoke-filled industrial past (the world’s first iron steam ship was built here). Although the vast majority of soot-covered factory chimney stacks have now given way to new developments - state-of-the-art office and technology complexes, schools, leisure centres and modern housing – local people have proudly held onto their tremendous community spirit and infectious sense of humour. Comedian Frank Skinner and actress Julie Walters were born here.
As well as a fascinating blend of cultures, the area also boasts a fantastic mix of history, culture, cuisine and nature. So whether you like spending your free time in art galleries, restaurants or shopping malls, or you’d much rather relax surrounded by acres of green space, you’ll find everything you’ll need to enjoy a better quality of life right here in Sandwell.
